Management Trainee

Our Designate program provides you with a true insight into what it will be like to manage your own store. Your first three months will be spent in one of our top performing stores before moving into your own. During the program you will receive a full induction to our business with a focus on the technical processes and understanding policies and procedures specific to WHSmith. We will support you with on the job learning, progress reviews and support from senior management.


Once successfully completed and in your own store we will then review your progress and consider a place in one of our three Retail Academy programs at supervisor, Store Manager or Senior Store Manager level. These programs are about developing and refining your leadership and management skills. This is done through a series of workshops, webinars and coursework modules designed to equip you with all you need to start a long and successful career with WHSmith. 



Case Study – Martin, Store Manager Designate

I have recently joined WHSmith as a Store Manager Designate and am over half way through the training program. I had previous store management experience so was a little dubious about what to expect.

As soon as I started, it was clear that this was going to be a hands on training programme; which for me was great. In my first few weeks, supported by my mentor (a Store Manager) and a Learning & Development Advisor we created my own Development Plan which was focused on ensuring I realised my full potential by the end of my first three months.

Having come from a retail background this was mainly structured around understanding the complex operations and policies for WHSmith, building upon my proven store management skills and experience.

My mentor is a highly skilled Store Manager who has been with the business for a number of years and has been a great support, demonstrating commitment to my development.

Although I still have a few weeks left to complete, I am now looking forward to being assigned to my own store where I can put all of my learning into practice. Overall I feel that the Designate program has given me the tools I need to start a bright and successful future with WHSmith.
