It takes a flair for building excellent supplier relationships, working with some big brands and negotiating market leading deals that increase sales and profit. Whether you focus on our High Street or Travel stores, life in Buying is incredibly fast-paced, so we look for people who thrive on variety and have a real affinity with what will sell. Our Buying function is highly data driven, so you need to be analytical as well as being creative about the products we could sell in the future and the ones we sell today. We’ll be looking to you to create new categories, ranges and pricing architecture and to deliver a variety of strategies geared towards helping us drive sales and profit.
In News & Magazines, our Buyers have to manage suppliers creatively, keeping on top of the latest trends, such as the massive adult colouring craze and influencing others to create exclusive WHSmith content for our Bookazines. Our Food & Drink Buyers are highly focused on promotions and pricing, creating attractive deals and using strategic vision, especially when it comes to healthy eating and seasonal confectionery. They have driven the success of our new Food to Go offering, which is one of our largest Travel categories and our Impulse range in our High Street stores. In Books you’ll need a real flair for promotional creativity and product recommendations, showcasing the titles in an enticing way, such as through The Times Recommended Reads and our exciting, new Zoella Book Club aimed at young adults. Our Stationery Buyers are given massive scope, focusing on the end-to-end process of new product development, from initial design to Far East sourcing, right through to finding creative ways to display the products in-store. One of our growing categories is Travel Accessories and Digital – our digital range in particular is expanding fast across our Travel stores, with more exciting plans for the future.
