WHSmith Benefits in association with Salary Extras, offers WHSmith employees a range of retail, leisure and motoring discounts via a dedicated website.
Wherever possible, bearing in mind the needs of the business, we offer a wide range of family-friendly flexible working arrangements including: part-time working; compressed working hours; career breaks and job share arrangements.
This salary sacrifice scheme enables you to exchange part of your salary (up to a maximum of £243 per month) in return for childcare vouchers.
We have a wide range of family-friendly policies. As well as maternity, paternity and parental leave, we also offer school starter and grandparent leave.
The Bright Horizons Day Nursery and Preschool is located on the grounds of the WHSmith Head Office in Swindon. It looks after children between the ages of three months and five years from 7:30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and offers discounted rates to WHSmith employees.
Health and Wellbeing
If you’re eligible, private medical insurance is offered through Cigna International at no direct cost to you, but is treated as a taxable benefit.
If you’re eligible, we offer an optional dental plan to cover the costs of most of your dental needs. The scheme is run through Cigna Healthcare Benefits and works through salary sacrifice.
Our ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme gives you the opportunity to purchase a bike for commuting to work through salary sacrifice, and you can use the bike outside work too!
If you regularly work with a computer screen, we will contribute towards the costs of eye tests.
The EAP service provided by Legal & General offers confidential independent information and guidance on medical, financial, legal and general issues. You can access it by telephone and it is totally confidential. The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Benevolent Fund is a WHSmith charity, designed to give one-off grants to any WHSmith employee experiencing significant and financial hardship, and to provide recuperative holidays and care breaks.
Pay and Reward
We make sure our pay rates are competitive and compliant with country legislation. One of the ways we do this is by reviewing them annually on the 1st April.
We automatically enrol all eligible job holders into our pension scheme (unless you are already an active member of such a scheme). You are eligible if you are working, or ordinarily work in the UK, are at least 22 years of age, and below state pension age, and earning more than the stipulated minimum criteria.
If you’re a non-eligible job holder, you won’t be enrolled in the scheme automatically – but you’ll have the chance to join if you want to.
We say thank you to our longest-serving employees with a gift of their choice (up to a set value).
Based on the contribution made by individuals and our wider financial performance, we pay bonuses annually to our Head Office and Store management teams.
This scheme gives you the opportunity to acquire WHSmith shares at a fixed discounted price and a means of saving with a major financial institution (subject to scheme rules and eligibility criteria).

All employees are entitled to annual holiday pay.
If you’re eligible, this scheme will let you purchase up to 26 extra days’ holiday per annum (pro-rated for part-time employees) through salary sacrifice.
