Our airport business is a whole other world. Our networks of stores at international hubs can serve 10,000 plus people a day – that’s more than the average supermarket serves in a week! That makes these stores very important – which is why our Chief Exec and senior managers visit them regularly. It’s also common for the landlord to pop by – it’s vital they’re kept up to speed on all our changes and plans. In short, our airport teams are never short of company! It’s great exposure for ambitious retail professionals. Plus there’s the challenge of constantly reviewing space and changing ranges, from adding new souvenirs to different brands of headphones – it’s vital that we keep ahead of the curve. In smaller, regional airports the buzz is different, with more business passengers taking domestic flights rather than holiday makers. The pace isn’t quite as frenetic but offering an excellent service to these customers is still just as key.
Within our airport stores, you’ll find a variety of management roles; Store Managers, Deputy Managers and Team Leaders. Their job is to drive sales, inspire the teams and to make sure every customer has a brilliant experience. The best managers take real pride in running outstanding stores. They’re hands-on, target-focused and entrepreneurial – treating the business as their own. This approach helps them meet the challenges they face in Travel: a fast-paced environment, security considerations and regular communications with suppliers. Airport locations are particularly demanding. You need experience of running large operations and ideally, multiple stores. You also need to thrive under pressure and train your people to manage when you’re not there. Tenacity, drive and good people skills will go a very long way. Some managers even have to contend with unsociable working hours (in 24/7 units). With landlords to think about too, we make sure that there’s plenty of support available. One way we do this is through our Retail Academy, which helps managers learn and progress.
Sales Assistant roles
To be a Sales Assistant in one of our airport-based stores, you need to work fast to keep customers happy. After all, they have planes to catch, and may be in a hurry. On the other hand, you might get holiday makers who want to shoot the breeze. The key is to adapt your service to each kind of person. Exemplary customer service makes all the difference, as does a good grasp of current promotions. At the same time, you need to keep shelves fully stocked – you never know when a plane will be delayed and your store will be filled with customers. Keep standards high and the store spick and span, and you’ll go a long way to impressing customers and managers alike. Show you’ve got what it takes and we’ll help you move up with the help of our Retail Academy.
